Coda (Superhuman Docs)
Renamed Superhuman Docs on 08/07/2026, this is still the best database-backed doc on the market and now has the best-built MCP server of any workspace tool we have scored, but its AI runs on models the vendor will not name, cannot read a PDF, has no quality measurement of any kind, and its enterprise-search product was wound down into a sibling you have to buy separately.

Strengths
Ten years of building a database-first document still shows. Tables, a real formula language, buttons, automations and 600+ Packs make this the most programmable workspace in its class, and the Packs SDK with sandboxed execution means you can build a connector rather than wait for one. Docs AI reads that structure rather than just the prose: it sees tables and formulas that are not on screen, edits them in place, and respects the permissions of whoever asked. The MCP server is the standout. Superhuman rebuilt it agent-first instead of wrapping the human API, so a tool call returns a whole Markdown page rather than forcing dozens of round trips, every response carries a Docs URI so the agent can chain, and calls are synchronous. It went GA for everyone on 08/07/2026, it is an official OpenAI connector with Anthropic in progress, and Enterprise admins can gate it. Billing stays sane: you pay for Doc Makers, editors and viewers are free, and Superhuman committed publicly that the rename changed no prices. Security is thorough, with SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA on Enterprise, an explicit no-training commitment covering third-party providers, and a public bug bounty. Superhuman Databases in closed beta takes a doc-scale product to a million rows, which is the ceiling long-time Coda operators kept hitting.
Honest dings
You cannot find out what is generating your work. The only public statement on models is a staff reply in the company's own community forum saying it is 'a mix between Anthropic and OpenAI depending on the task' and that Docs AI and AI columns do not run the same model today. No docs page says it, no version is named, and there is no user choice. That matters more than usual because there is no evaluation surface of any kind, and during the beta not even a usage log, since the credit system and admin caps were paused on 06/07/2026 with a replacement expected only around August. The AI also cannot read a PDF or an image, which a community OCR Pack has to solve. Coda Brain, the 800+ permission-aware-connector enterprise-search layer, was wound down on 29/10/2025 and folded into Superhuman Go, so the cross-tool grounding story is now a second product and Brain's citations went with it. Only Enterprise can turn Docs AI off; everyone else can decline to use it. A user reported in the public launch AMA that Docs AI returned a colleague's payslip. Launch day itself brought SSO login loops, broken custom domains and a CloudFront outage that took down the app and the MCP server. Three names in twenty months (Coda, then a Grammarly subsidiary, then Superhuman Docs) has produced sustained unease in the vendor's own forum, and new docs can no longer be published to the gallery. AI views and Databases are both closed beta with pricing undecided.
