Asana

“the system of action where humans and AI run work together” — the vendor’s own words

The Work Graph is a genuinely good substrate for agents, and Asana is betting the company on it — but AI is still under 1% of a $790.8M revenue base, credit accounting is opaque enough that one customer burned 4 million credits in a month, and you cannot pick a model.

The per-seat price is only half the bill. AI Studio credits are capped per billing account, not per user, so a 40-person Advanced org shares the same 75K monthly pool as a 5-person one. Credit consumption is per AI rule run and scales with prompt complexity and trigger frequency — third-party implementers put a typical intake-and-routing rule at roughly 1,200–2,200 credits per run. The free Personal tier was cut from 10 users to 2 in November 2025, so the real entry point is Starter.

Strengths

Asana is one of the few work-management vendors with a structural answer to the agent question rather than a chat box bolted on the side. The Work Graph gives agents a permission-scoped ledger of who owes what to whom by when, and every AI feature inherits that permission model — AI can only read what the asking user can read. The Agentic Work Management relaunch (Work Innovation Summit, London, 4 June 2026) shipped Asana Dash as a proactive daily agent, thirty-plus prebuilt AI Teammates that need no prompt engineering, and ten-plus new integrations. The MCP server and AI Connectors put the Work Graph inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, so Asana works as a data source for the AI you already use. The StackAI acquisition ($75M upfront, announced with Q1 FY2027) buys a real execution layer into CRMs, ERPs and databases and, per management, pulls the roadmap forward more than a year. Enterprise+ compliance depth is serious: SIEM, eDiscovery, DLP, HIPAA, data residency, EKM. AI partners are contractually barred from training on customer data and required to delete it after each query.

Honest dings

The credit model is the sharpest problem. Credits are pooled per billing account rather than per user, the billing view only shows workflows, and Asana's own forum carries a leader post titled 'How We Accidentally Burned Through 4 Million Asana AI Studio Credits in a Month' alongside customers describing the accounting as 'a bit of a black hole'. You cannot pick a model to control cost, and there is no evaluation surface to prove a workflow is worth running before it runs. Commercially, the AI story is still small: over $6M ARR exiting FY2026 against $790.8M in revenue is under 1%, and dollar-based net retention sat at 96% — the base is not expanding on its own. AI Teammates and AI Studio Pro are contact-sales, which puts the genuinely agentic tier out of reach of the SMB the Starter price implies. And the June 2025 MCP tenant-isolation bug — 34 days live, roughly 1,000 organisations notified, project data readable across accounts — is the exact failure mode that should worry anyone connecting an agent to a shared plan. Asana found and fixed it themselves and gave customers logs, which counts for something, but it happened.

Best for: Cross-functional teams of roughly 20 to 500 people who already run their work in Asana and want intake, routing and status reporting handled automatically — and who have someone willing to own credit budgeting. Not the right buy for a team of two (the free tier no longer supports one), for anyone who needs model choice or measurable AI quality, or for a small business expecting the headline seat price to be the total cost of the AI.
