Credits are compute time, not tasks: 1 credit = 30 seconds at 256 MB, and raising memory multiplies the burn. Development and testing consume no credits. A memory-heavy branching workflow can cost 24 credits per run against 2 for a simple 35-second one, so model your busiest workflow rather than your trigger count.

Strengths
Two things here are genuinely best-in-class. First, tool access: 10,000+ pre-built tools across 3,000+ APIs with managed OAuth, so an agent acts on behalf of your end users without you building a single auth flow or storing a single token. Second, the MCP implementation - one static OAuth URL, SSE and streamable HTTP negotiated automatically, every tool annotated read/write/destructive so a client knows what it is about to do, documented paths into ChatGPT and Claude, and a self-hosted option if you want the server on your own infrastructure. Underneath that sits a real runtime: Node.js, Python, Go and Bash in any step with unrestricted package access, up to 10 GB RAM and 750 seconds, and the operator surface most of this category lacks - per-workflow version history with rollback, bi-directional GitHub sync with diffs and pull requests, and a live event inspector. String.com closes the loop by turning a prompt into a deployed agent. The free tier is usable for real work and development never burns credits.
Honest dings
The billing unit punishes exactly the workflows that do interesting work. Credits are compute time at a memory multiplier, so a fan-out job enriching records against several APIs burns far faster than its trigger count suggests - the vendor's own table shows a memory-heavy branch at 24 credits against 2 for a simple run. There is no self-hosting of the platform, which rules it out on data-residency grounds. Nothing evaluates output quality, and while toolAnnotations warn a client that a tool is destructive, nothing stops the call - if you want an approval gate before an agent deletes something, you build it. And then there is ownership: Workday announced the acquisition on 19/11/2025 and Pipedream's own site now carries the 'joined Workday' banner. Workday bought Sana and Flowise in the same stretch and is assembling them into an HR-and-finance agent platform. That roadmap is a tailwind if you run Workday and a question mark if you are a solo developer on 100 free credits a month. Independent reviewers flag both the self-serve tier-compression precedent and a public changelog whose shipping cadence has been questioned. Keep your workflows portable - they are code, so they already are.
